Durant's Point Living Shoreline

Coastal Federation

Location: Hatteras, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

Durant’s Point is a privately owned, uninhabited point of land that has long been used by Hatteras residents as a community destination for fishing and swimming. It also serves to protect the village and its fishing heritage by buffering Hatteras Harbor during storm events. Along the southern tip of the point, a bulkhead and riprap revetment have been constructed by the Army Corp of Engineers to protect the harbor entrance. The intent of this project is to continue and extend protection to Hatteras Harbor by creating a living shoreline that will connect to the Corp’s structure.

Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park

Rainwater Harvesting System

Location: Wanchese, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park is a State Agency staffed by Department of Commerce employees. Centrally located on the East Coast of the United States on the South End of historic Roanoke Island in Dare County, N.C., Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park enhances business opportunities in the seafood and marine trades. Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park, the only one of its kind in the nation, is the home port to Dare County commercial fishing vessels, several boatbuilding and repair shops, a marina, and other marine-related businesses. We prepared a High-Density Stormwater Management Plan for this facility utilizing Best Management Practices, and incorporating a vegetative collection network routed through a network of infiltration devices with controlled release into adjoining receiving streams. BPG most recently designed a rainwater harvesting system (cistern) that filters, collects, stores, and distributes rainwater via a mechanical pump system for reuse in support of a boat “washdown” operation.

Harvey Estuarine Access

Soundfront Access

Location: Nags Head, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

The Harvey Estuarine Access is a public access is handicapped accessible facility developed by the Town of Nags Head for the purpose of non-motorized recreational activities. The facilities consist of a sound front boat launch ramp, restroom facilities, and associative parking to accommodate various water sports activities. This project also contains sustainable elements including a cistern for the capture of rainwater runoff for reuse in irrigation of the surrounding landscape. Other sustainable techniques utilized include solar panels for the heating of hot water for the bathroom facilities as well as bio-filtrations basins, or rain gardens, for the capture and treatment of stormwater runoff. Bissell Professional Group provided engineering and planning services for the redevelopment of this tract.

Dare County Board of Education Projects

Kitty Hawk Elementary && Manteo Middle School Rain Garden Projects

Location: Kitty Hawk & Monteo, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

BPG teamed with the Dare County Board of Education and the Coastal Federation to design rain gardens for each of these schools in an effort to provide aesthetically pleasing landscaping, natural habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife, and promoting sustainable design practices while encouraging environmental stewardship and community pride. Also known as bioretention areas, rain gardens are small depressions planted with native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers that collect, store, and infiltrate stormwater runoff before it enters a local waterway. In addition to BPG donating a portion of our design services, numerous members of the community volunteered their time and funds to prepare and purchase items to plant and mulch beds, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. Now in place, it is not only serving its intended purpose to reduce run-off pollutants – it’s an outdoor science lab for indigenous plant life.

Waterside Villages

Active Adult Community

Location: Grandy, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

Fronting the majestic Currituck Sound on the Outer Banks, Waterside Villages is a private, gated Active Adult Retirement Community with 148 single-family houses and 84 multi-family units, for a total of 232 dwelling units. BPG devised a unique “shallow placement” discrete pipe collection network design for conveyance to a series of wet detention basins for this community. Existing drainage features were adapted into the design to mimic pre-development conditions as well as provide additional treatment mechanisms.

Nags Head West Side Multi-Use Path

Phase III

Location: Nags Head, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

Located in the heart of the Outer Banks, this town of Nags Head project consisted of the design & development of a 10’ wide hard surface multi-use path. The purpose of this project was to establish a pedestrian multi-modal path along the west side of U.S. Hwy 158 in an effort to encourage pedestrian traffic along this route. In an effort to offset the reduced treatment by the introduction of a curb & gutter collection system, the existing grassed filter strip & grassed swale was converted into a grassed “Dry” biofilter. Components of this conversion consisted of a pretreatment component, shallow sediment forebay, level spreader for velocity dissipation and flow distribution, check dams and outlet weirs to promote retention and aid in infiltration, and the conversion of all proposed solid piping material to a perforated type material.

Town of Nags Head

Stormwater Capital Improvement Plan

Location: Nags Head, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

Known for the largest sand dune on the east coast, the Town of Nags Head is centrally located on the Outer Banks. BPG teamed with WK Dickson as a sub-consultant on this capital improvement project offering surveying and civil engineering services. These improvement projects assisted the town in determining the balance of competing stormwater management issues and to aid the Town in preparing for an increasingly strict regulatory environment. A total of 26 project areas within the town were identified for either flood control or water quality and prioritized for implementation as part of the Capital Improvement Plan.

South Ridge Subdivision

Drainage Study

Location: Nags Head, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

Located just south of Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head, NC, the South Ridge community drainage study was to observe drainage within the South Ridge Subdivision after a significant rainfall event. The intent of the drainage study was to identify and observe drainage issues within the South Ridge subdivision. The data collected was then reviewed to provide recommendations for the implementation of remedial measures to address the flooding conditions.

Pirate's Cove

Tournament Pavillion

Location: Nags Head, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

The 13,000 square-foot waterfront Pirates Cove Tournament Pavilion is an existing development currently residing on a 0.74-acre parcel located off of Sailfish Dr. within the Pirates Cove Community in Manteo, North Carolina. The intent of this design was to provide adequate pollutant filtration measures from stormwater runoff for the existing structure. Stormwater measures for this project included an infiltration trench, an infiltration basin, and a pre-treatment forebay with the provision of a pump to “Marlin Pond”, which is being utilized as a wet detention basin for the site and surrounding areas. These measures were designed to the maximum extent possible to treat runoff from the associated development in accordance with best management practices.

Pirate's Cove

Sailfish Villas

Location: Nags Head, North Carolina

Project Highlights:

This project consisted of three condominium buildings within the Pirate’s Cove Development in Manteo, NC, which are located along Sailfish Drive and adjacent to the Pirate’s Cove Marina. The stormwater management design for this project utilized a combination of methods to attenuate, temporarily detain, and infiltrate stormwater runoff. The application of the BMPs consists of two separate infiltration trench devices, one located on the east and west side of the structures, to capture rainfall runoff from the structure in conjunction with employing a permeable pavement system for the associative parking and drives in combination with a peripheral infiltration trench.
